Hydride 3
Hydride 3, also known as Hydride 3: The Space Memories, marks an important turning point in the cult series of T&E Soft. Released on MSX1 (one MSX2 version also exists) under reference TEX-79, this third opus, although adapted to a more modest hardware than PC-88 or MSX2 versions, manages to offer a surprisingly rich and ambitious gaming experience for the machine.

About
Building on the real-time RPG of its predecessors, Hydride 3 pushes further exploration, interaction and complexity. The universe is wider, more open, and integrates a day/night cycle, physiological requirements (failure, sleep) and alignment system affecting certain events in the scenario. A technical feat on MSX1, despite the obvious graphical limitations compared to the MSX2 version.
Bold technical adaptation
If graphics are simplified here (tiles 8×8, limited palettes), the very essence of the gameplay is respected. The action remains fluid, the labyrinthic dungeons are present, and the game mechanics – such as magic, skills, and character evolution – remain of rare richness for the era on MSX1.
Anecdotes & Legacy
-
Hydride 3 inspired several Japanese RPGs with its semi-open world system and simulation elements. It is considered a direct influence for titles as Ys III or even some episodes of The Legend of Zelda.
-
A Western Version amended (with changed names) will later be released on other platforms under the title The Quest for Camelot.
-
Aspect « realistic » The game (failure, sleep, weight) still divides players today between respect for ambition... and frustration at a sometimes ruthless difficulty.
Hydride 3 on MSX1, in its TEX-79 version, remains an important part of the MSX collection, and an example of what Japanese developers knew to draw from a very limited architecture.
