The principle of the game is simple: Puyos of different colors fall from the top of the screen, and the player must stack them in groups of at least four of the same color to make them disappear. Unlike Tetriswhere the objective is to survive as long as possible, Puyo Puyo introduces a strategic aspect with combo sequences. The more the player chained the reactions, the more obstacles he can send to his opponent in duel mode.

The MSX version of Puyo Puyo offers a solo mode in which the player faces a series of characters from the universe Madou Monogatari, a series of RPG developed by Compile. Each opponent has his own game patterns, making each fight unique and demanding good control of the chain system.

Graphically, the game exploits the capabilities of MSX, with expressive Puyos and fluid animations. The music, although limited because of the hardware, remains lively and typical of the Compile productions of the time.

Puyo Puyo is originally a spin-off of the series Madou Monogatari, an RPG that shares the same universe and the same characters.
This first Puyo Puyo is less known than its subsequent adaptations on consoles such as Mega Drive or Super Nintendo, which will actually popularize the license.
The MSX version offers a solo mode against the computer, but does not include the two-player mode that will make the game successful on other media.
Compile, the studio behind Puyo Puyo, is also known for Aleste, another iconic MSX series.
