R-Type Dimensions III

A new era for a shoot-up legend

The R-Type saga has remained one of the pillars of the horizontal shoot-up since the late 1980s. Created by Irem, it has marked an entire generation thanks to its biomechanical universe, its formidable challenge and the system of the Force module, which has become a reference of the genre.
In 1987, the game arrived in arcade and then on a multitude of domestic machines. The MSX version, published in 1988 (MSX2 compatible FM-Music), is one of the most emblematic adaptations of the system. It allowed the MSX standard to show that it could accommodate demanding and technically ambitious titles.

Dimensions III – The return of a classic with a modern vision

Announced by ININ Games, R-Type Dimensions III revisits completely R-Type III: The Third Lightning, a cult episode of the 16-bit era. The project is not limited to a simple visual lift.

Key points presented by the publisher:

  • Total recast environments, enemies and bosses in 3D HD

  • Possibility to switch at any time between modern style and more classical artistic direction

  • Remastered soundtrack to get closer to the power and dynamics of the original

  • New ergonomics, modernized controls, local co-op and current comfort options

  • PC (Steam), PS5, Xbox Series, Switch and Switch 2, May 2026

The studio states that the gameplay remains true to the fundamentals of the series. The tactical management of the Force module, the loaded fire, the demanding patterns and the methodical progress that made R-Type's reputation.

Although Dimensions III will not be released on MSX (damage!), it reinforces the legacy of a license that has helped shape the modern shoot-up.
For MSX players, R-Type remains a cornerstone. It is one of these titles that placed the Japanese microcomputer at console level on the ground of technical and precise gameplay.
