Blood Gear

Blood Gear is an action-RPG of 1994, born from the collaboration of a trio of developers who, at the time, dreamed: Hudson Soft (Bomberman, Falcom remakes on PC-Engine), Westone (Wonder Boy, Monster World) and Red (Sakura Taisen, Galaxy Fraulein Yuna). Just that! Released on 28 October 1994 exclusively on Super CD-ROM2This title is one of the last great games of the machine. What about my version?

Sealed under blister, new, never open. An absolutely sublime collection object.

About

A story of revenge and metal

The Empire Deguna sows terror across the planets through its Powered Gears — huge combat robots driven from inside. One day his soldiers invaded a laboratory where two scientists worked secretly on their own Powered Gear. One of them, fatally injured, manages to hand over a control device to his young apprentice Aref, before succumbing to his wounds. Crazy with rage and grief, Aref had more than one goal: to bring down the Empire.

The scenario revolves around an exciting rivalry between an endearing hero and a memorable and malicious antagonist. The developers have clearly thought about the construction of this universe, and it feels like every cutscene.

Action, RPG, mechas: the great mixture

The gameplay alternates two distinct modes. In the city, you move in a view top-down Classic RPG: you talk to the inhabitants, repair your mech, buy equipment and improve your stats. On the map of the world, you select areas to explore that are then played in side-scrolling action, enemies in support.

Your inventory includes three slots of dedicated equipment: shield, melee weapon and remote weapon. The shield triggers automatically when you are at the stop, but it simmers and needs to be replaced. The melee weapons are devastating and never lack ammunition — You'll use it a lot. Remote weapons, on the other hand, are regularly dropped by enemies, so there is no need to buy them.

Eight statistics are available for improvement. The most crucial to survive are defense (DP), living points (SP) and movement speed (WS), because your starting point is really slow and fragile. A little grinning at the beginning of the game is therefore necessary, but once launched, one never gets bored.

The PC-Engine gives everything it has

Like any good Super CD-ROM2 that respects itself, Blood Gear is Full of cutscene in beautiful pixelsaccompanied by voice dubbing integrated by a quality casting. Mech environments and designs are searched, detailed, impressive.

The music is entirely generated by the PC-Engine sound chip — Some might be disappointed — But the compositions are excellent. The themes of city, map and exploration will remain in your head well after having placed the controller. It's simple: you build the sound and enjoy it.

A must-have for fans of mechas and action-RPG

The game has often been compared to Zelda II, this monument of action-RPG old-school, and analogy is right: same structure, same intensity in the combat zones, same satisfaction to progress.

Despite a few small defects, Blood Gear is amply worth your time if you are looking for something in the vein of Assault Suit. Minimum count 10 hours of play to see the end of it. And the game got the honors of a reissue on the Wii Virtual Console Japan — proof that even Nintendo recognizes its value!

So a version sealed under blister ? It's rare. This is absolute grail for any serious PC-Engine collector. That kind of room, we don't let her go.
