About

In 1989, Konami adapted his arcade hit Contra on MSX2, but with a radical bias: instead of the nervous scrolling that made the reputation of the game, Gryzor opts for a fixed screen progression. Each table is designed as an action puzzle where one has to quickly analyze the position of the enemies, manage the available weapons and find the right timing to move forward. This choice of gameplay, imposed by the technical limitations of the MSX2, gives this version a unique identity, often perceived as more strategic and demanding.

The graphics take full advantage of the MSX2, with colorful backgrounds, fluid animations and impressive bosses. The soundtrack, although simplified compared to the arcade, remains true to the iconic themes of the series.

Interesting anecdote: Contra was renamed Gryzor for Europe, a common practice of Konami at the time (as Nemesis for Gradius). This version is also known for its great difficulty: enemies constantly reappear, and every mistake is paid immediately.

On the collection side, the game came out in cartridge with its standard Konami box and manual. Like many Konami MSX titles, it is now highly sought after, especially because it marks one of the few appearances of the franchise Contra on the MSX standard.

A cult game, demanding and unique, which is part of the masterpieces for any MSX collector.
