Mahjong Vanilla Syndrome
Mahjong Vanilla Syndrome is originally an arcade game signed Nichibutsu — either Nihon Bussan — The Japanese studio, especially known in the West for its classics like Crazy Climber and Moon Shuttle, but which in Japan earned much of its income from this type of production. The title arrived on PC Engine Super CD-ROM in October 1991, with production ambitions that were felt in the first minute.

About
Japanese mahjong, bunny girls and carrots
The tone is set from the animated intro: a young man is mysteriously transported in a field of flowers, welcomed by fluid animation and quality voice dubbing. We are far from the austere mahjong on a black background. The opponents are bunny girls with varied and neat looks, and the games are played... for carrots, in perfect consistency with the Lagomorphic universe of the game. It's out of date, it's charming, and it gives a real personality to the whole thing.
On the content side, the game offers several modes: a history mode where opponents are confronted one after another, a tournament mode and a duel mode to choose their opponent directly. How to vary pleasures according to mood.
A clean, accessible, and frankly cute mahjong
The rules are those of the classic Japanese mahjong, with the standard tiles that are found in all games of the genre on PC-Engine. Accessible to those who already know the basics, and clearly in the category « cute » rather than explicit — It's neither ecchi nor hentai. The game focuses on the atmosphere and the realization rather than on provocation.
For those less experienced in mahjong, a secret code is hidden in the main menu: by selecting the main mode, holding the directional cross to the left and pressing the button II, you unlock all the dialogues, illustrations and victory sequences without having to win a single game. A nice little attention for collectors who want to enjoy the visual content without taking the lead.
A niche title, for an audience of connoisseurs
Mahjong Vanilla Syndrome is distinguished in the plethorical catalogue of mahjong games on PC-Engine by its careful realization and coherent universe. It is not the game that revolutionizes the genre, but it is a title of good outfit, representative of what Nichibutsu knew how to do: fan service well packed, with care in presentation. A beautiful object to complete a PC-Engine collection or for any amateur of old-school mahjong with aesthetics from the 1990s assumed.
