About
If there is a work able to sum up Rumiko Takahashi's talent to tell simple, funny and deeply human stories, it is Ikkoku House.
Published in 1980, the series follows the daily life of Yusaku Godai, a student without a penny living in a boarding house populated by colourful characters, and Kyoko Otonashi, the young manager he gradually falls in love with. What could only be a simple romance becomes over the years a true chronicle of Japanese life, mixing humour, emotion and absurd situations.
This adaptation MSX2 builds on the animated movie Kanketsuhen, literally « The Final Chapter », which marks the culmination of the relationship between the two main characters. Micro Cabin here chooses to focus on atmosphere and narrative rather than pure action, offering an experience that is more like an interactive adventure than a traditional game.
The player progresses through various events inspired by the film, meets the emblematic characters of the pension Ikkoku-kan and participates in sequences allowing to advance the story. The graphics faithfully reproduce the visual style of the animation and the portraits of the characters are immediately recognizable for all lovers of the original work.
By the late 1980s, this type of adaptation represented a significant part of the Japanese market. The successful manga and animated gave birth regularly to video games, often reserved for the Japanese public. House Ikkoku is one of the most prestigious licenses of this time and its arrival on MSX2 testifies to the exceptional popularity of the series.
An interesting anecdote: Unlike many works by Rumiko Takahashi based on fantastic or crazy comedy, Maison Ikkoku has remained famous for its realism and mature approach to human relations. Even today, it is regularly cited as one of the greatest novels in manga history.
For MSX collectors, this Kanketsuhen version is a particularly interesting piece. It represents the encounter between the world of Japanese manga of the 80s, animation and the golden age of the MSX2. Its very Japanese character also explains that it has remained largely unknown in Europe, which today strengthens its appeal to adventure game enthusiasts and the art lovers of Rumiko Takahashi.
A beautiful collection piece that will seduce fans of Micro Cabin as well as lovers of Japanese manga and animation.
