Thexder

Thexderdeveloped by Game Arts and published on MSX in 1985, is an action and platform game skillfully mixing exploration and intense fighting. The player embodies a transformable robot capable of moving from an armed humanoid form to an ultra-fast jet, allowing to confront waves of enemies while navigating through complex mazes. Its innovative gameplay and difficulty encountered make it a real challenge for the most experienced players. Accompanied by a memorable soundtrack and detailed graphics for the time, Thexder imposed itself as a landmark title in the history of MSX games.

You have here an extremely rare exceptional piece in this state. The game is almost new with its box in perfect condition, its leaflet and cartridge that works perfectly. It's a museum piece! Acquired during my trip to Japan in 2012 in the TRADER store.

About

History and rarity

The history of Thexder plunges the player into a futuristic world invaded by hostile machines. You need to cross levels full of dangers and traps, while optimizing your attack and defense strategy with the unique transformation capabilities of the robot. This mix of frantic action and strategic thinking has attracted a wide audience as soon as it is released.

What Makes Thexder especially popular today, it is its rarity on MSX, especially in its full version with box and manual. Few copies in perfect condition have survived over the decades, making it a highly sought after collection piece. Its popularity in Japan and its success on several platforms have also helped make it a cult title for retro game lovers.

Thexder was one of the first games to take advantage of self-tracking shots, allowing the robot to automatically target its enemies. This feature, then revolutionary, inspired many titles afterwards. In addition, the initial success of the game on MSX encouraged Game Arts to develop follow-up actions including Firehawk (Thexder 2) on MSX2 and MSX2+, consolidating franchise as a must in science fiction games.
