About
For the little story, this game was not developed by Konami Japan's teams, but by those of Panasonic, Panasoft (also known as Pana Fun Production) to be more precise which was the software development division of the Japanese giant.
Released in 1988 for MSX2+, F1 Spirit 3D Special is the direct and improved continuation of F1 Spiritdeveloped by Konami and distributed on three diskettes. This game abandons the top view of the first opus F-1 Spirit (developed by Konami) to adopt graphics in pseudo-3D with a zoom effect, as Pole Position. Focused exclusively on racing Form 1, it pushes the boundaries of the MSX2+ and stands out as one of the most advanced titles on the platform.
A rich and customizable gameplay!
In addition to the modes Free Run and Grand Prix, F1 Spirit 3D Special proposes a Battle Mode playable to two players. Thanks to JE700 Multiplayer Link Cable, sold separately, it is possible to connect two MSX2+ computers for split screen races, a technical feat for the time.
The game offers advanced vehicle customization: colour, engine, tires, suspension, brakes, gearbox and wings can be adjusted to optimize performance on each circuit. The level of difficulty and the number of laps are also adjustable, giving players great freedom.
A revolutionary sound with the FM-PAC!
F1 Spirit 3D Special is also remarkable for its use of the chip Yamaha YM2413 OPLL (FM-PAC), integrated in certain models of MSX2+ and MSX turboR. This is the Konami game only to exploit this sound chip, usually prefering its own chipset CSC. This choice gives the game a rich and immersive musical atmosphere, with a soundtrack composed by Goro Kin (probably a pseudonym).
Legacy: A race in history!
Although F1 Spirit 3D Special has remained exclusive to the MSX, it shares many elements with F-1 Sensation, out on Famicom in 1993, while retaining its unique features as the Battle Mode. This title is today a must for collectors and retro game enthusiasts, symbolizing the golden age of racing simulations on MSX.
