The Philips NMS 1205 Music Module, marketed from 1986, is probably one of the most emblematic extensions ever produced for MSX computers. Developed by Philips, it allows to add real audio power to the machine thanks to the sound chip Yamaha Y8950, also known as MSX-AUDIO.

This module is not limited to a simple sound generator: it also incorporates a digital recorder to record and return external voices or sounds. At the time, this opened up unprecedented perspectives, both for musical creation and for games using sound samples.

The Music Module contains:

The chip Y8950 offering 9 FM channels + 1 PCM channel for samples.
32 Ko RAM dedicated to the temporary storage of digital sounds.
A connector for external musical keyboard (optional piano Philips NMS-1160) to compose and play live on the computer.
One for microphone, allowing to record the voice or any audio signal.
RCA audio outputs to connect to a hi-fi channel.

On the software side, it comes with a integrated music editor (Music-BOX), accessible from the start, allowing to create complete tracks without having to load an external program.
