ThePhilips NMS 1205 Music Module, marketed from 1986, is probably one of the most emblematic extensions ever produced for MSX computers. Developed by Philips, it allows to add real audio power to the machine thanks to the sound chipYamaha Y8950, also known asMSX-AUDIO.

This module is not limited to a simple sound generator: it also incorporates adigital recorderto record and return external voices or sounds. At the time, this opened up unprecedented perspectives, both for musical creation and for games using sound samples.

The Music Module contains:

The chipY8950offering 9 FM channels + 1 PCM channel for samples.
32 Ko RAMdedicated to the temporary storage of digital sounds.
A connector forexternal musical keyboard(optional piano Philips NMS-1160) to compose and play live on the computer.
One formicrophone, allowing to record the voice or any audio signal.
RCA audio outputs to connect to a hi-fi channel.

On the software side, it comes with aintegrated music editor(Music-BOX), accessible from the start, allowing to create complete tracks without having to load an external program.
