The game takes place in a futuristic megalopolis where demonic creatures threaten humanity. Tianren and his partner Seine find themselves immersed in a struggle against a mysterious organization and gradually discover a plot involving supernatural forces.
The universe of the game skillfully mixes elements of cyberpunk with Chinese and Japanese mystical influences. Detailed environments, fluid animation of fighting and optimized use of Turbo R make Illusion City a real technical showcase of the MSX. The turn-by-turn combat system is dynamic, and fully doubled dialogues add unprecedented depth to the gaming experience.
- Illusion City is one of the few MSX Turbo R games to fully exploit the capabilities of the R800 processor and PCM audio chipset.
- The PC-98 version, released later, offers slightly improved graphics but loses the unique charm of the MSX Turbo R version.
- The game has never been officially translated into English, but a fan-translation now allows non-Japanese to discover it.
- Tadahiro Nitta, composer of the game, is also known for his work on Fray and Xak, other cult RPGs of MicroCabin.
