Jinmu Denshou

Released in 1989 exclusively on PC-Engine, Jinmu Denshou is a run and gun in pseudo-3D that tries to innovate on a console not suitable for this kind of achievement. Inspired by titles like Space Harrier and 3D World RunnerIt offers an unusual freedom of movement for its time, as well as a combat system combining shooting and body-to-body. In spite of its technical ambitions, the game suffers from a blond performance that is now worth a controversial reputation.

About

In Jinmu Denshou, the player evolves in a universe mixing Japanese mythology and science fiction, facing waves of enemies in a third person gameplay. Rare for a PC-Engine game: the player can move freely deep, lateral and vertically, with a back scroll that simulates 3D.

The title also incorporates a sword combat system, which makes it original... but also frustrating, because of the lack of real depth management. The lack of sprite scaling on the PC-Engine makes platform phases and mixed attacks particularly imprecise. The difficulty is also often considered unfair, especially during boss fights, which require a number of disproportionate blows to be defeated.

To know

  • Jinmu Denshou is sometimes cited as a forerunner of 3D action games to the third person, though imperfect.

  • It is regularly listed among the least appreciated titles of the PC-Engine, alongside games like F-1 Pilot or Energy.

  • Nevertheless, there remains an interesting example of technical experimentation on an 8/16 bit console, and draws the attention of collectors for its rarity and originality.

Conclusion

If Jinmu Denshou is not a masterpiece, it is a fascinating testimony of the developers' willingness to push the limits of hardware. A niche game, imperfect but daring, reserved for the curious, the collectors, or those who like to meet challenges... even unjust!
