Parodius - Konami

Parodius on MSX, it's Konami who decides to make a nice mockery of his own Gradius monument to make it a totally barred, colorful and immediately cult shoot-up. Behind its delusional appearance, the game remains a real Konami title, with a strong visual identity, a striking sound atmosphere (SCC) and this very special charm of the large MegaROM MSX cartridges of the late 1980s.

About

With Parodius, Konami signed in 1988 one of the most singular titles in his MSX catalogue. The game resumes the base of the shoots up horizontal Gradius way (Nemesis), but replaces the spatial seriousness with a gallery of absurd characters, unlikely situations and completely shifted enemies. The result is a rare mixture: a technically serious game, but dressed in permanent humour and a truly unique artistic direction.

This MSX version occupies a special place in the saga. Before becoming a well-known series of arcade and console enthusiasts, Parodius starts here on MSX with this already very strong identity. The playable casting directly announces the color: Tako the octopus, the Penguin of the Antarctic Adventure universe / Penguin Adventure, Goemon, Knightmare Popolon and even the Vic Viper of Gradius / Nemesis. A real little Konami family reunion, completely unlikely and therefore totally Parodius.

What still makes its charm today is precisely that contrast. We smile in front of the delusional universe, but we find behind all Konami's know-how: demanding progression, sustained rhythm, very recognizable graphics and soundtrack that fully participates in the atmosphere. It's funny, strange, sometimes almost absurd, but never messed up.

I spent a few white nights on this game, whose music was completely enchanted at the time. The first time I tested it, it was on a pirate diskette, and I didn't have any CSC Konami cartridge yet trafficked to benefit from the CSC sound without possessing the original cartridge game. So, at that time, it was a great shoot in his PSG. It was necessarily less impressive on the audio side, even though the game was already super good for MSX1.

As soon as I got my modified Salamander (the fans of MSX know!), I was able to hallucinate in front of such a rich musical and visual.

I never managed to finish it, because even though he's full of humor, he's still very complex. The different sets, the variations of style according to the character you chose, the completely crazy atmosphere... Frankly, this game was something!

I knew long after the joy of having some tips to move a little better. Thanks to the Japanese magazines I could buy in Japanese bookstores in Paris such as Tonkam or Tokyo-Do and Junku.

During the game, press F1 to pause, type the code, and then confirm with RETURN.
