An original view, a catchy gameplay

The game adopts a profile view, in pure 2D, on a flat terrain without depth — which may surprise at first glance, but which finally fits very well into the action. You can make headlines, passes, smashes, counters, dives, and even choose from several types of services: below, over the head, or in smashe service. A real technical panel that gives depth to gameplay!

Your team has four players on screen. You only control one, and your teammates manage the rest correctly, especially around the net. So it's up to you to serve from the bottom of the field and organize the game. The opposing AIA is frankly honest, and matches can quickly become intense.

Nations, Modes, Rejoicing

The game offers eight national selections: USA, USSR, Brazil, Holland, France, Italy, Japan and China, each with its own strengths. And for perfectionists, it is even possible to create their own team, choosing the name, colors, and positions of each player.

In solo, two great modes are available to you: the game of exhibition to train, and the World Cup to get the ultimate title. In the World League, you play seven games against other nations, and passwords allow you to save your progress. And if you really don't want to play... There's even a spectator mode to watch a game run by itself! Admit it's original.

Visually clean, musically discreet

The sprites are well designed and properly animated. The audience in the background gives a real competition room atmosphere. This is not the most beautiful game of the PC-Engine, but it is clean, readable, and spins smoothly.

The soundtrack's a little bland, we're not gonna lie to each other. Some sound effects and short melodies punctuate marked points and victories, but nothing that will hit you at the speakers. This is clearly the weakest point in the title. On the other hand, the game breathes the arcade in the right sense: nervous, direct, readable.

A must-have sporty on PC-Engine

Super Volleyball is a game that controls well, offers a real challenge and makes sense to two players. Variations in service and smash strategies really enrich the experience in reverse.
