About

Released in 1987 on MSX, The Maze of Galious (known as Majou Densetsu II: The Maze of Galious in Japan) is the continuation of Knightmare (which was a Shoot up). Developed also by Konami and out on MSX in 1986, this game marks a major evolution by combining elements of platform and exploration in a vast nonlinear world.

The scenario

After saving Aphrodite in Knightmare, heroes Popolon and Aphrodite come back to face a new danger. This time, the demon Galious seized the castle and threatened to plunge the world into darkness. Players must travel through an immense maze to defeat Galious and restore peace.

Gameplay and innovations

The Maze of Galious is distinguished by:

  • A vast interconnected world : The castle consists of several rooms and levels filled with traps and enemies, with secret passages and puzzles to solve.
  • Two playable characters : Popolon, the strong and resistant warrior, and Aphrodite, agile and able to access certain areas inaccessible to Popolon.
  • Objects and Improvements : Keys, weapons and potions are scattered in the game, adding a strategic aspect to exploration.
  • A password system : Unlike other games of the time, The Maze of Galious saved its progress with passwords.

Reception and inheritance

The game was acclaimed for its depth, challenge and meticulous artistic design. It is often cited as a precursor of type games Metroidvania thanks to its free exploration structure.

A nod to Konami : Several elements hidden in the game pay tribute to Konami's other titles. For example, some enemies look like characters of Knightmare and Penguin Adventure.

A real source of inspiration : The independent game La-Mulana (2005) directly inspired by The Maze of Galious and pays tribute to him through his gameplay and labyrinth structure. Same for Pampas & Selene released in 2023. Many versions have also been proposed to improve game graphics on both emulators and PCs.
